Kwekwe Energy

Kwekwe Energy houses various portfolios: renewable energy, natural gas and LNG, Petroleum, and Petrochemicals. We are developing alternative energy solutions to leverage the rapidly advancing energy transition in South Africa. This is spearheaded by the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which pursues a diversified energy mix including nuclear, natural gas, renewable energy, and energy storage technologies. We strive to be a leader in this fast-growing, sustainability-focused space.

Our Energy Approach

Hybrid Energy Solutions

The swift decline in the cost of renewable energy in recent years means it’s now becoming the most affordable way to generate electricity worldwide, and Africa stands to benefit significantly from renewable hybrid energy solutions. Renewable hybrids offer a reliable, affordable and dispatchable integration of renewable energies. Our approach is to integrate renewable generation sources (mainly solar and wind), power conversion technologies (inverters) and energy storage solutions (batteries) directly into microgrids.

Hydrogen Energy Solutions (HES)

Hydrogen presents a more sustainable energy source due to its abundance. It’s also a cleaner, more flexible energy carrier and stores more energy on a mass basis than natural gas and oil. One of the primary goals of Kwekwe Energy is to provide affordable, reliable and sustainable hydrogen energy solutions to deliver end-to-end electricity solutions for South Africa’s domestic and industrial markets.

End-to-end Hydrogen Solutions

This will primarily focus on developing green hydrogen production processes that use solar energy coupled with battery storage solutions. Kwekwe has deep expertise in developing solar and hydrogen hybrid energy projects. Our hybrid energy packaged solutions are designed to offer end-to-end, flexible and cheaper energy from the generation source to our customers through localised microgrids.

Natural Gas & LNG

Natural gas will continue to play a pivotal role in South Africa’s energy transition. According to the Integrated Resource Plan (IPP), natural gas will be a major resource of baseload power generation while the transition to renewable energy takes place over the next 20 years. Kwekwe Energy is well-positioned to participate across the natural gas value chain, including natural gas supply and gas infrastructure development.

Gas Supply

Kwekwe Energy sources and distributes natural gas to various domestic demand centres, including city gate schemes (covering residential, commercial and industrial areas) and Gas-to-Power Generation (GPG) schemes. We import Liquified Natural Gas (LPG) and transport domestic gas, including supply from Mozambique gas fields, via overland pipelines.

Gas Infrastructure Development

Kwekwe Energy develops infrastructure to facilitate gas transportation from production zones to domestic markets, including LNG terminals for gas storage and regasification. This includes Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, natural gas pipelines, and city gate gas infrastructure covering gas distribution and feeder lines, regulating stations, and internal low-pressure piping.
