Kwekwe Farming

Kwekwe Farms is a leading producer of high-quality poultry products for several domestic markets. We operate vertically integrated business units across the poultry value chain, and our long-term objective is to grow a sustainable and competitive poultry business anchored by innovation and profitability. Our goal: to become one of the biggest poultry producers in South Africa and, later, the continent.

Our Farming Approach

We’ve adopted an integrated approach to poultry production. We operate in poultry feed production, broiler production, chicken abattoir and processing facilities for nationwide sales and distribution.

Our farming operations:

Sunrise Hill Poultry Farm

Kwekwe Farms has acquired Sunrise Hill poultry farm in Mooiplaats, Pretoria. Sunrise Hill is an ongoing concern with day-to-day operations, and it breeds and supplies chickens for the greater Pretoria region. This covers the Central Business District, Townships and parts of Mpumalanga Province. Sunrise Hill is Kwekwe Farm’s flagship operation with an installed capacity of 250 000 chickens per month, and it currently produces 132 000 chickens monthly.

In response to growing broiler chicken demand, we have expansion plans to ramp up production capacity to 200 000 chickens per month over the next eight months. We aim to increase production capacity by 15% year-on-year until we reach 500 000 chickens per month, our projection for the next ten years.

Sunrise Hill Solar Farm

Kwekwe Farms is developing Sunrise Hill Solar farm as part of its sustainable farming initiative. The initial phase will take the poultry farm off the municipal electricity grid. The second phase will install additional solar and battery storage capacity to supply electricity to the surrounding communities as an independent power producer (IPP). This initiative aligns with the South African government’s program to move away from using coal for baseload electricity production to utilising renewable energy sources.

Sustainable Farming

The Batho Pele mindset underpins our approach to sustainable farming. We empower the communities we operate in through two methods. Firstly, we incorporate local small- and medium-scale businesses into our supply chain. Secondly, we have several meaningful social development programmes.

Our operations are based on these sustainable principles:

  • Energy self-sufficiency schemes
  • Project-based minimisation of environmental footprint
  • Water-smart techniques
  • Eco-friendly waste management
